USA | Mission-Critical Electrical Estimating

Data Center Electrical Estimating Services

Optimar Precon provides data center electrical estimating services for US electrical contractors and general contractors. We take off and price the full power path, from medium-voltage service and switchgear through UPS, generators and busway to the PDUs feeding each rack.

Every estimate follows the designed redundancy topology, keeps vendor gear separate from installation labor, and flags owner-furnished equipment before you submit.

Eight Data Center Electrical Packages, Estimated Separately

A data center electrical bid is several packages with different units, vendors and labor profiles. Pricing each one on its own keeps high-value gear visible and makes bid leveling against supplier quotes straightforward.

How the Estimate Is Built

We Estimate Along the Power Path, Not Sheet by Sheet

Data center electrical drawings repeat the same equipment across A and B paths, phases and data halls. Tracing each path from utility to rack is the most reliable way to avoid double counts and missed feeders.

Simplified 2N data center power path Two independent paths, A and B, each run from utility service through MV switchgear, transformer, LV switchgear with generator backup, UPS and PDU to a dual-corded rack. A B Utility A MV Switchgear Transformer LV Switchgear UPS A PDU A Generator A Utility B MV Switchgear Transformer LV Switchgear UPS B PDU B Generator B Dual-CordedRack MV SERVICE PACKAGE CRITICAL POWER PACKAGE RACK POWER
Simplified 2N power path. Every box on both paths becomes a counted item, and every arrow becomes a measured feeder.

1. Reconcile the Single-Line

Equipment on the single-line diagram is matched to the equipment schedules and room layouts, so ratings, quantities and A/B tags agree before counting starts.

2. Count Gear, Measure Feeders

Gear is counted by rating and configuration. Each feeder is measured by route, with conductor size, parallel sets, conduit or busway and terminations at both ends.

3. Multiply by Hall and Phase

One typical data hall or block is built in detail, then extended across halls and build phases, with differences between them priced as adds or deducts.

Redundancy and Cost Drivers

How Redundancy Topology Changes the Electrical Estimate

The redundancy scheme decides how much gear, distribution and switching the bid carries. We price the topology on the single-line, not a rule-of-thumb multiplier.

TopologyHow it worksWhat it adds to the estimate
N+1One spare unit within each equipment group (for example, one extra UPS module or generator).Extra units, their connections and controls; a single distribution path in most designs.
2NTwo complete, independent systems (A and B), each able to carry the full load.Duplicate equipment trains, a second set of feeders, switchgear and PDUs, and more testing.
2N+1Two independent systems, each with its own spare unit.Everything in 2N, plus spare units on both paths.
Distributed redundantThree or more systems share the load so any one can fail (for example, 4-to-make-3).More systems at smaller ratings, cross-connected distribution and more complex switching.
Block / catcher redundantSeveral active blocks backed by one reserve block through static transfer switches.A reserve UPS block, STS units and the reserve bus distribution.

A Tier III or Tier IV target does not fix the bill of materials on its own. We price the topology shown on the drawings and flag any gaps against the stated resilience criteria.

Labor and Installation Drivers

What Moves Electrical Labor Hours on a Data Center

Material is usually the easier half of the estimate. These factors decide whether the labor holds up.

Heavy Gear Setting and Rigging

Switchgear lineups, transformers and generators need cranes, rigging plans and set sequences priced as their own activities.

Large-Conductor Terminations

Parallel sets of large feeders mean many high-labor terminations at every piece of gear, counted lug by lug.

Busway vs. Cable Routing

Busway installs faster and simplifies tap-offs; cable can be cheaper in material. We price both as alternates when the design allows.

Phased Energization

Halls brought online in phases add temporary power, tie-ins, shutdown windows and remobilization.

Prefabricated Power Modules

Skids and e-houses move labor off site; the estimate shifts to setting, interconnection and site terminations.

Owner-Furnished Equipment (OFCI)

Owners often buy UPS and generators directly. We split OFCI from CFCI so you price installation only where the owner supplies the gear.

Testing and Commissioning

Commissioning Levels Carried in the Estimate

Data center electrical scopes usually include contractor support through integrated systems testing. We list which levels are in your scope and price the labor, load banks and standby time for each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Data Center Electrical Estimating FAQs

What does data center electrical estimating include?

It covers the full power path: MV service and switchgear, transformers, LV switchgear, UPS and batteries, generators and transfer switches, busway and feeders, PDUs and rack power, grounding and EPMS. The estimate separates vendor gear from material and labor, and lists testing, commissioning and owner-furnished equipment.

How do you estimate switchgear, UPS and generators?

Gear is counted from the single-line diagram and equipment schedules by rating, sections and configuration. Equipment cost comes from vendor quotes or allowances, and setting, rigging, terminations and testing are priced as separate labor items so the quote and the install can each be checked.

How does redundancy topology affect the electrical estimate?

N+1 adds spare units within an equipment group. 2N duplicates the full system with separate A and B paths. Distributed and block-redundant designs use several smaller systems or a reserve block with static transfer switches. Each topology changes gear counts, feeders and switching, so we price the one on the drawings.

Should a data center use busway or cable, and can you price both?

Busway usually installs faster and makes tap-offs and future changes easier; cable and conduit can cost less in material. The right choice depends on loads, routing and schedule. When the design allows, we price both as alternates so you can compare installed cost.

How do you handle owner-furnished equipment (OFCI)?

Data center owners often buy UPS systems, generators or switchgear directly. We split owner-furnished, contractor-installed (OFCI) items from contractor-furnished (CFCI) items, price installation only for OFCI gear, and list receiving, storage and setting responsibilities in the scope log.

Do electrical estimates include testing and commissioning?

Yes, where it is in your scope. We list which commissioning levels apply, from factory witness testing (L1) through integrated systems testing (L5), and price the electrician support, load banks, temporary power and standby time for each level.

How much does outsourced data center electrical estimating cost?

Project-based estimating starts from $20 per hour. The total depends on the number of data halls, phases, redundancy topology, drawing quality and revisions. You receive a fixed quotation after a scope review, and dedicated electrical estimators are priced as an ongoing monthly resource.

What drawings do you need to start an electrical estimate?

Send the electrical single-line and riser diagrams, equipment and panel schedules, electrical room and data hall layouts, Division 26 specifications, addenda, vendor quotes and the OFCI equipment list. Include the bid form, phasing plan and deadline so the estimate matches how you will submit.
